We all know that Dragon Ball Z was an amazing series, but many of us did want to see this continue aside from the many movies that appeared. And thankfully, we now have the opportunity to see beyond that, with Dragon Ball Super coming in to fill the void.
Right off the bat Dragon Ball Super continues right where Z left off. Simply put, the episode starts at only 6 months after the very large fight that we say against Majin Buu. Most of the heroes now are a little out of their comfort zone because even after defeating the baddie, our characters are back to a very different life.
Simply put, Goku is now a farmer and he tries to live a normal life, just like he promised Chi Chi. But obviously new threats appear, and even during this first episode, the big bad is presented in the form of Lord Beerus, which is an Egyptian cat god with some distinct features. I personally feel that this is one of the best baddies we have ever seen in the series, and they do an amazing job when it comes to setting up the character and taking the experience to the next level. The baddie is very powerful because even during the episode he actually cuts a planet in half, so one has to wonder if there are any limits to the immense power that this enemy has.
Aside from this, the episode is a little stale, especially since quite a lot of the action presents Goten and Trunks team up in order to find a present for Videl. The plot is really nice to be honest, but this portion just didn’t connect to me at all, although some might like it, so it does pertain to personal taste most of the time.
There aren’t that many action sequences here which is a shame, but the major one that focuses on Goku is just brilliant and amazing as a whole, since it combines his old powers with new ones, blending in nostalgia and the current times.
I feel that the plot line is a little laid back, which isn’t bad at all, but they could have implemented a little more action, considering that this is the first episode of a new series.
Don’t let that fool you though, this is 100% Dragon Ball right from the start, because the animation style is still the same, the characters are definitely recognizable and you actually get a sense of nostalgia which is just amazing to be honest.
Everything from the tempo, story and animation seem solid, and to be honest I feel that this is the best cartoon I watched recently. Dragon Ball Super Episode 1 definitely gets me excited for the next set of episodes in the series and to be honest I can’t wait to see what they will do next with Super from here!
